¿¿ATERRIZARÁN EN BROADWAY LOS DANESES??

Ya comenté el pasado verano mi sorpresa al descubrir la fuerza del teatro musical en Dinamarca. Cierto que no tienen el número de giras y grandes producciones simultáneas que tenemos aquí y que puede que sea un grupo más reducido de actores de este género que aquí en España pero… definitivamente tienen algo que hace que valga la pena no perderles la pista.

Este verano conocí la productora Fredericia Teater, que está relacionada con la única escuela especializada en teatro musical de toda Dinamarca, situada en la ciudad de Fredericia. Ellos fueron los que llevaron a la ópera de Copenhague la primera producción europea del musical Aladdin y llevarán este año La Sirenita. Por supuesto, he mantenido el contacto con ellos, ya que se portaron genial conmigo desde el principio, y el pasado otoño me llamó la atención que anunciaban un nuevo musical original danés: Esaura.


El musical escrito por el compositor y letrista americano John Bucchino y el escritor danés Mads Nielsen se basa en la novela de Carl E. Simonsen «Abraham Fournais». La historia se sitúa en la ciudad danesa de Fredericia, en 1849. La ciudad, asediada por insurgentes durante meses, finalmente ha sido liberada. Esaura no se atreve a hablarle a su padre, Abraham -un miembro prominente de la comunidad reformista francesa- sobre su relación con Christian, un luterano. Pero Abraham los descubre juntos y  obliga a Esaura a prometerle que no volverá a ver a Christian de nuevo. Destrozado, Christian le cuenta a su madre, Alma, que abandona el pueblo. Abraham decide que Esaura debería casarse con su compañero de negocios, Joseph. Mientras, Christian conoce a Dorothea, que se enamora de él, aunque él no puede olvidar a Esaura. Llega la guerra y con ella los enredos en esta historia «a lo Romeo y Julieta» que mezcla rencores, intrigas y corazones rotos.
Este musical, interpretado por Anders Gjellerup Koch, Annelouiise Abegg Gomard y Christian Lund (al que pudimos escuchar este verano cantando Santa Fe) entre otros muchos tuvo una gran acogida entre el público danés. Lo que se ha visto reflejado al otro lado del charco con la grabación de una demo de la música de Esaura con la colaboración de nombres como Sierra Boggess (The Little Mermaid, Phantom Of The Opera, Les Miserables), Lindsay Mendez (Wicked, Dogfight, Godspell), Victoria Clark (Cinderella, Sister Act,…) y Marc Kudisch (A Minister’s Wife, 9 to 5). 

¿Será esto la antesala de un posible traslado a Broadway? Aún no lo sabemos pero, desde luego, en BwayInSpain seguiremos atentas.



WILL THE DANES LAND ON BROADWAY???


Hi guys!! I know it’s been way too long since I last posted in English… sorry about that. Things here have been kind of crazy.

Last summer, I told you about my huge surprise when I found out how strong was musical theatre in Denmark. It’s true that they don’t have such a big amount of tours or big productions at the same time as we do here. They may also have less actors than us but… They definitely do have something worth keeping an eye on.

Last summer, I discovered Fredericia Teater, a danish producing company related to the only school specialized in musical theatre in Denmark, placed in the city of Fredericia. They were the ones who brought to the Copenhagen Opera House the first European production of Aladdin and will also stage this summer Disney’s The Little Mermaid (how am I not surprised… Den Lille Havfrue is so «everywhere» in Cph that it’s one of the first things I learnt to write in Danish without having to look it up). Of course, I’ve been keeping tabs on them, since they were wonderful with me from the very beginning, and last fall my attention got caught when they announced a new original danish musical: Esaura.

The musical, written by the American songwriter John Bucchino and the Danish writer Mads Nielsen, is based on Carl E. Simonsen’s novel «Abraham Fournais». The story is set in the Danish city of Fredericia, in 1849. The city, besieged by insurgents for months, has finally been liberated. Esaura can’t bring herself to tell her father, Abraham – a prominent member of the city’s dwindling French-Reformed community – of her relationship with Christian, a Lutheran. But Abraham catches them together, and makes Esaura promise not to see Christian again. Heartbroken, Christian tells his mother, Alma, that he’s leaving town. Abraham decides Esaura should marry his business partner, Joseph. Esaura refuses. Meanwhile, Christian meets Dorthea, who takes a fancy to him. He grows closer to her, but is still unable to forget Esaura. War breaks out and with it the tangles in this Shakespearean-like story unfold mixing schemes, bitterness and heartbreak.

This musical, starring Anders Gjellerup Koch, Annelouiise Abegg Gomard and Christian Lund (whom we could hear last summer singing Santa Fe) among many others, had a great reception and that has been reflected on the other side of the pond. Last month, a demo of the music of Esaura was recorded with names such as Sierra Boggess (The Little Mermaid, Phantom Of The Opera, Les Miserables), Lindsay Mendez (Wicked, Dogfight, Godspell), Victoria Clark (Cinderella, Sister Act,…) and Marc Kudisch (A Minister’s Wife, 9 to 5). 

Will this mean a Broadway transfer in the future??  We don’t know it yet but, here in BwayInSpain, we will definitely pay good attention.
